Guide to the Senegal Parrot and Its Family
by Mattie Sue Athan, Dianalee Deter, Susan Green (Photographer) (paper).
This is a great book for anyone with a Poicephalus parrot (Senegals, Jardines, Meyers, Cape Parrots, etc.). Most other bird behavior books focus on the larger species, and there are definitely some differences in how the smaller parrots are handled. Also, the book deals with some of the special characteristics of the Poicephalus -- their love of playing on their backs, for instance -- in recommending ways to play with and train your parrot.
Relatively quiet, friendly and acrobatic, the bright green and yellow domestic African Senegal parrot must be socialized early and their domesticated behavior patterns regularly maintained to keep them tame. This book offers valuable clues to the Senegal's sensitive temperament and other specialized needs, along with information about the bird's behavior, dietary needs, and appropriate indoor environment. Photos throughout.
Complete Guide to Senegal Parrots
by Pamela Hutchinson (paper).
Another good book on the Poicephalus family. Most of the information on Senegals will also apply to Cape parrots.
From the author: My book is full of tips for keeping and breeding the Senegal parrot and does include some information on other Poicephalus species. Included are chapters on nutrition, toys, housing, health and Senegals as pets. I've tried to make this book as complete an approach to this wonderful species as possible. I sincerely hope it will meet everyone's expectations.
Langflügelpapageien
by Dieter Hoppe, Peter Welcke (paper).
Another good book on the Poicephalus family. This book is currently only in German and the last time I checked it is listed but not available for sale from the US Amazon.com site. It is available from the Amazon.de German site. This cover is different from the one shown on Amazon; it is from the revised edition and was sent to me by the author.
From the author: There is a new book about the 10 species of genus Poicephalus, only in German unfortunately.

Birds for Dummies

'Birds For Dummies' is the most complete discussion of the pros and cons of pet bird ownership that I have ever seen.
