My female cape Ruby, who just turned 3 years old in June, is doing the same thing. She flies at my kids (17, 15, and 10)- started @ 5-6 months ago. I have to keep her in her cage or under very close watch/close to me whenever the kids or guests are around). She lunges at them and now also at my husband at times.

When she came back from our bird sitter (in April-who she adores as well) who breeds birds and has alot of boarding birds- she would ONLY go to me- and bit my husband. I took her to the vet who examined her and said she was in breeding mode (I thought she was young for that yet- but they gave her a hormone shot and within a week she had calmed down. She will go to my husband and still occasionally nips at him- but not like she did.

I was really worried b/c my husband said if she kept on biting him........ she was out of here. And I am NOT getting rid of her. She's WAY too cool and smart! She's a great bird...........but I am a little disappointed b/c when we were picking a bird- all the literature said Capes were gentle and good family birds- but clearly she has chosen me with my husband second......but the kids off limits.
If I am holding her and one of my kids approaches she will lunge at them. :(

So I'm having the same sort of problem you are Ellen. But I am not giving up on Ruby. She's awesome and Capes ROCK!!!!! Like with any person or pet we have to take the bad with the good.

Good luck. And don't let your husband make you get rid of Merlin. :)

: I have a 3 year old male cape, named Merlin. In the past 6 months he has become very aggressive. I don't trust him with anyone but my daughter and myself. He flew (his wings are clipped)at my sister and scratched her face.If he was tired he was always nippy but not like now.I'm wondering if my daughter moving out has affected him. When she comes home (often) he is excited to see her, gets right on her finger then bites.I think he's upset that she has moved because when he sees her car leave he makes a sound like crying. He has also started screaming and my husband says it's time to get rid of him so any help is welcome. Thanks
