- Have two proven pairs plus two younger pairs made up from my own young with an unrelated partner.
The two proven pairs are wild caught and came into the country in the same batch. I had one pair a friend the other (I purchased them from him last year). My pair have bred for the last six years to date 24 youngsters (h/r most but have p/r some). Just lost two from new pair in cold weather but am hoping to make unrelated pairs in the future. Young have gone to Belgium, France,Ireland and most in UK. Have not found any other successful breeders in UK.

- Comments:
- Chuy has the same parents as our famous Thor. He's 10 months old and already quite the talker. He's happy and playful and full of life.
Chuy has a big attitude. He has these hilarious whole-body hissy fits that are hard to describe... He squawks loudly, leans way back & puts his wings out all in one movement. When I, say, give him a bowl of food that he thinks he should have rec'd 10 seconds earlier, he has a hissy fit. Sometimes I think they are expressions of joy, but it's hard to tell! He might do this when I give him a new toy, or take away a toy, & just about any time I give him food.
He loves to dangle upside-down. I also hold him on his back & give his belly kisses. He likes that and talks to me while I do it. Often he'll make a raspberry sound and/or laugh when i kiss his belly. It's really funny.
He can be naughty when it's time to go in his cage. He'll nip and not step up. I threaten to get the towel, and he gets even crankier. So I'll have to grab him with a towel, which he hates. However he has never bitten me as hard as my Grey used to bite, and certainly has never drawn blood.
His wings are clipped. He'll hop off his cage at least once/day to just have a look around the floor, or to grab a dropped toy. Sometimes he hops to the floor and walks into the other room to find me.
He's quite the talker at just 10 months. Sound effects: phone ringing (both the base unit & the handset), microwave, crushing can, kisses, me couging, clearing my throat, raspberries, dogs barking, tongue clicking, trills, whistles, me laughing, the dogs' squeaky toy... ETC. Words/phrases include: hello, Barbie, Murphy (dog), Little Rachel (dog), What a good birdie, no barking, no biting, whatcha doing?, peek-a-boo... He says strings of words I can't understand, and has fake phone conversations complete with the rings and the answering beep. "ring... ring... beep. Hello? blah blah blah, okay, okay, alright, BYE. Beep."
I ask him what my name is and he answers "Barbie." Except for today. He keeps calling me Murphy, my dog's name.
I lost my CAG about a month ago, and for a while afterwards Chuy was very sad and very quiet. Fortunately he is recovering from that... Now he is saying many things my CAG used to say. We both miss him.
Overall Chuy is an exuberant and very happy bird. He's full of life, joy, and attitude. I'm very grateful for his presence in my life.

Many hours spent enjoying watching the 2 of them get on. Both, very intelligent birds. For now, play time can be rough, but they both seem to respect their limits and stop short of injury.
Love this web site and have learned a lot through everyone's questions, anwers and shared experiences.

- I adore these girls. They are so funny, sweet and loving. They certainly can be a hand full, but most times are very good. I've worked with Liz Wilson on certain behavior and diet issues, and that has helped educate me to be a better parrot mom, and therefore they've improved. I find parrots completely amazing creatures.

- Why you chose a Cape Parrot: I have a Greater Jardine and my first parrot was a Senegel. I fell in love with the Poicephalus parrot's personalities and traits. They fit me and my lifestyle. When my Senegel died four months ago, I was heartbroken. I did not intend on getting another bird, but while brousing some of my favorite birdsites came across a four month old Grey-headed baby available. I had been reading about the Capes for over a year, just for fun. Thought, wow, that would be a great parrot to have around. Never thought it would happen because I had my two birds with no room for another. But fate stepped in and here I am with a beautiful baby boy.
Physical Characteristics
- Sex: Male
- Sub-species: Suahelicus
- Hatch Date: 11/19/03
- Weight: 400 grams approx.
- Coloring: In baby molt - has coral on head and leg bracelets.
- Length: approx. 11 1/2 "
Breeder
- Where Purchased: Old World Aviaries - Austin, Texas
- When Purchased: 04/04
- Age When Brought Home: 6 mos.
- Hand Fed: Yes
- Price: $1200.
Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: Very friendly
- Talking ability: Already repeating many words after I say then. Says "Good Boy" and "Hi" on his own.
- Noise Level: He is not as loud as my Greater Jardine. I would rate him as relatively quiet.
- Activity Level: Rowdy play in the morning and evening when I let him out of his cage. Play quietly with toys when in cage, except when he wants out. Much beeping for a few minutes or he makes a noise that sounds exactly like "Oink, Oink".
- Likes to bathe: Spray with light mist, seems not to mind.
- How cuddly or affectionate: He likes to get head and cheek scritches. Loves to sit on my shoulder and if he has played enough will cuddle next to my face.
- Territorial: Not at this age and I hope to keep him that way.
Cage
- Size and type of cage: Calif. cage 32x24x28 on stand with playgym on top. I will get him a bigger cage now that he is not so clumsy .
- Favorite toys and perches: Wood toys with different textures. Also, likes shells. Manzanita perches of different sizes.
Diet
- Regular Diet: Homecooked mixture in the morning (brn. rice, barley, beans, sweet potatoes or yams, broccoli, carrots, etc.) walnut or almond everyday, sprouts, a couple Nutri-berries and Nat. ZuPreem pellets at all times and fresh fruits and vegs.
- Favorite Food: Pellets, but I keep feeding different things hoping to broaden his horizons.
Vet Info
- Avian Vet or other Vet: Cascade Vet - they have an avian specalist.
- Wings Clipped: Yes Both
- Health and Accidents: No
- Comments:
- Bart's wings are clipped so he can still fly at a 45 degree angle and land safely. He is too heavy bodied to have a severe clip. My Cape has a happy fun loving attitude and he makes me laugh a lot.

Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: Is just now coming into his own. Was shy and did not want to be handled, but from about 6 month of age, he has changed. Now I am able to play with him, hold him, pet him, and he wants to hang out with me. He is jus now, at about 9 months of age accepting my wife.
- Talking ability: He is mubling a great deal, makes really weird noises, and I think I have heard him say his name and " I love you", but I have not been able to confirm this yet.
- Noise Level: generally very quiet. Likes to "click", and make various noises, as well as mumble in the a.m.
- Activity Level: becoming more and more active as he approaches 1 year of age. I would now say that he is very active, however, he gets tired around 9pm.

- How cuddly or affectionate: has become very affectionate, allows petting and stroking, but does not llike to be unside down, and does not lay down to cuddle like my goffin and severe

- Sparky was given to me by the breeder as he has slightly deformed legs. Alice was bought from another breeder to keep him company, not neccessarily to breed. Alice is dominant as other female Capes I have had have been. They live outside in suspended aviaries apart from the coldest months.I had wild-caught suahelicus but parted with them- they were very nervous.I suspect they might be reasonably good mimics and make good pets.We buy a top quality seed mix, not much sunflower- they love Walnuts in shell and palm nuts (which we buy frozen). We also feed a wide range of fruit and vegetables. The person who bred "Alice" gave his birds brown bread and honey in a cube, one piece each daily .Noise is not a problem, (well we do have 5 pairs of Mealy Amazons so "noise" is relative!)

I fell in love with Merlin as soon as I saw him. He makes us all laugh and his noises make people belly laugh. Capes are a WONDERFUL bird to have as a friend. I would certainly own more if given the chance too. Merlin is spoiled rotton to the core and loves it all, but doesn't expect to be spoiled, so it's a nice mixture. He's mezmorized with falling snow and loves to watch Animal Planet and Paulie the movie. Every bird lover should own a Cape...

Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: Very friendly. Begs for attention from everyone. Stands on tiptoes with wings out begging to come out or be picked up.
- Talking ability: Still baby garbles but a few times we have heard "hello" or "pretty bird." Seems to talk most when being petted or alone. Shrill whistle like noises, tiny little peeping sounds and clicking are the most often heard noises.

we have a nanday conure and a quaker also. Compared to these 2 noisemakers,Jelly Bean is almost silent! Several loud "whisle" sounds every morning and evening are the loudest but 1-2 mins. and usually its over.

but again comparing only to our other 2.
- Likes to bathe: Seems to enjoy misting and has occasionally been spotted diving in her freshly refilled water dish. Not to fond of the shower or bird bath in a dish yet.
- How cuddly or affectionate: Extremely affectionate. Loves to cuddle. Will lay in your arms on her back like a baby. Likes to be wrapped in a blanket. Wants to be held close to you, would prefer being held around her body close to you rather than perched on your hand. Has a great "step up" response though, very obedient. - Why you chose a Cape Parrot: Loved the personality of the Poi, and wanted to add a larger bird to our flock. Liked the playfulness and trusting nature of the Cape. Read glowing reports from Cape owners and breeders.
Physical Characteristics
- Sex: Male
- Sub-species: Suahelicus
- Hatch Date: January 2003
- Weight:
- Coloring: Silver-grey head with slight tinges of orange. Lime green belly, back, and underwings. Black tail feathers tinged with orange. Kelly green wing feathers tipped in black. Horn colored beak and feet. Orange ankle feathers right now!
- Length: 9 inches from nose to butt - 12 inches from head to tail
Breeder
- Where Purchased: Feffies
- When Purchased: July 2003
- Age When Brought Home: 7 months
- Hand Fed: Yes
- Price: $1400, including vet check and labs
Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: Somewhat shy around very small children. Will go to any adult.
- Talking ability: Building a pretty good vocabulary and practicing new words every day.
- Noise Level: Quiet most of the time. Morning calls. Occasional rowdy days.
- Activity Level: Very active. Loves playing, hanging upside down from toys, investigating new items with his beak, tearing up wood chunks and toys, visiting people, etc.
- Likes to bathe: On his shower perch, in a bowl of water, under his water bottle.
- How cuddly or affectionate: Very cuddly. Likes to lie on his back for some scritches and cuddles.
- Territorial: Sometimes opens his beak and growls - but more bark than bite when it comes to his territory. Even lets one of our other birds hang out with him in his cage!
Cage
- Size and type of cage: 32x23x31 plus playtop area and a wonderful playgym from Madcool Playgyms http://www.madcoolbirdgyms.com/
- Favorite toys and perches: Anything he can chew on or tear apart! He loves this huge mass of short sisal rope with chunks of soft wood tied in it. He likes playing on a recoil air hose with plastic toys on it. He loves cholla wood pieces, large bells, and rattles. His favorite perch has a large block of wood filled with large lollipop sticks on the end of it. He also likes his swing (wood wrapped with cottom rope).
Diet
- Regular Diet: GoldenFeast Madagascar mix and Scenic/Pretty Bird pellets at all times. Then, he gets fresh food every day - sometimes a cooked bean mix, sometimes boiled soybeans, sometimes birdie bread with papaya/canteloupe/spirulina, sometimes mustard greens or other fresh veggies/sprouts. Every day is something different.
- Favorite Food: He LOVES soybeans that have been soaked 24 hours and boiled for 15 minutes. He likes a soaked Scenic pellet. He loves almonds. The birdie bread is always a big heat. And he enjoys chomping on a good chicken bone or pork rib bone.
Vet Info
- Avian Vet or other Vet: Scott Stahl, DVM
- Wings Clipped: Yes Both
- Health and Accidents: No health problems or accidents
- Comments:
- His wings are only clipped moderately. He can still fly from the bird room, through the living room, and into our kitchen without problem!
Gonzo is the PERFECT mix of playful and cuddly. It is so much fun watching him do "tricks"! He likes to hop. And he likes to lay on his back. Sometimes, he'll intentionally flip off of his swing and land on his back (6-inch drop) -> then he'll hold still and look at us until we clap for him. Then, he'll get up and keep playing. He loves to hang from his toys upside down, while chewing on another toy! He is quite adventurous - loves to get into everything - but he understands when things are off limits (like the cords to Dad's computer). We can leave him out on his playtop - he won't come down unless we call for him or he wants to come check out what we are doing. He's not michievious... at least, not yet!
He loves having his face rubbed. He'll lay in your hand and let you rub on his face with this look of ecstacy on his face. He closes his eyes, relaxes his whole body, and lets his head fall into your hand. He loves to hang out on his back in your lap. He'll let his little feet dangle in the air and look at you with this adorable face. He likes to snuggle this way and get scritches on his neck. He also likes when you kiss his feet and tickle him! He won't hang out on you quite as long as our Red Bellieds, but he still loves affection. He really enjoys some loving!
The funniest thing about him... he has a toe fetish He loves to gently chew on toes. He never bites hard - just sort of beaks around you toe. If he can see a toe, you're in trouble! He'll do whatever it takes to come tickle and chew on your toe.

Breeder
- Where Purchased: Given to me
- When Purchased: October 2003
- Age When Brought Home: a little over 1 year
- Hand Fed: Yes
- Price: unknown
Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: shy and standoffish
- Talking ability: Cricket can say a few little phrases; I am working to increase her vocabulary and help her speak more clearly. (She does a lot of muttering.)
- Noise Level: moderate
- Activity Level: VERY active
- Likes to bathe: Likes to bathe in a bowl of water. She has not been impressed so far when I mist her, and she prefers to sit on the shower curtain rod and look down on me when I shower.
- How cuddly or affectionate: Very affectionate
loves to have her head, neck, chin, and underneath her wings scratched. Prefers to have her beak stroked and her head scratched at the same time. But
when she's in the mood to explore and play, she does not want me to interfere!
- Territorial: A little territorial when she's holding something to eat
gets a little defensive when I want to share our bowl of popcorn. Otherwise, she really isn't very territorial.
Cage
- Size and type of cage: This was also given to me
I think it is a King's Cage. It is a heavy duty bird mansion. It is about 5 x 3 x 2 1/2 feet.
- Favorite toys and perches: Really likes foot toys made of plastic. She has a toy made of dried corn-on-the-cob and wood blocks that she demolished in a couple of days. Likes to steal pens.
Diet

Coarse; vegetables, nuts, and 1/2 hard-boiled egg a day.
- Favorite Food: Lima beans, almonds, and eggs
Vet Info

- Comments:
- Cricket is the sweetest bird. Every morning she wakes me up with alarm clock noises. She loves squawk at my cockatiels and make them fly around. When she sees me go into the kitchen to boil an egg for her she is beside herself with excitement. We are still getting to know each other, but I love this bird!

- Comments:
- Ngo's weaning took much longer than I expected. I had planned to wean him onto a strict diet of Zupreem pellets and fresh food. However, he was simply not eating enough to fill his crop on his own. He played with the Zupreem pellets more than he ate them. I finally gave in and gave him seed, out of desperation, and he was sustaining himself within a week or so. I then tried the regular Harrison's diet, with very little success at piquing Ngo's interest. Now, however, with the Harrison's cayenne pellets, it's (almost) smooth sailing, with regard to Ngo's diet.
All things considered, this is a wonderful bird that entertains himself and others constantly. He LOVES attention, food, toys, flapping his wings and wearing his harness for forays outside. Most surprising to me is that he plays for hours with his toys, but has yet to destroy even one toy. With his beak size, I was expecting to have to commit to buying a large and small toy for Ngo every week. Not true (phew!).

- Avian Vet or other Vet: Avian
- Wings Clipped: Yes Both
- Health and Accidents: Yes. she had a col soon after I got her, spent all night with an electric blanket around her, and feeding her glucose water. Also we went away on holiday and left her with a parrot owner, she pined for me, and chewed the leg ring so it stuck into her foot, when I came back, the vet had to rmove it , using gas to anaesthetize her.
- Comments:
- I have had so much happiness from 'Baby', I am sure that Capes are all such characters. Parrot owners should all know that Capes are very special! I hope I live as long as she does, and that we grow old together!
I breed rare poultry, and the fact is that chickens and the like, are stupid(I should know), It just amazes me that one bird can be so daft and yet another can be almost human like! If there is a God then he's very odd!

- Comments:
- This bird is the first son of Doc and Munchkin, and as they didn't attend the babies, he and his sister were fed from day one by the breeder in the foothills of the Sierras. They kept him for the first 7 months and raised him with a variety of other birds. So far, he seems to have a very gentle and calm personality, and acts very content. It is easy to see and understand what he wants. He is quite affectionate in many quiet moments, and is very delicate when touching humans with his beak. I am delighted to be living with him and will look forward to a long friendship. I'd be happy to correspond with other Cape owners.
Hope

- I think the grey-headed cape is the perfect bird and have for twenty years. They are fun, can speak better than a grey are extremely intelligent and yet tough. They are not afraid of anything and yet are gentle. They will play with you or amuse themselves. We must reestablish them. Having said that we must also realize that we cannot take American birds and repopulate Africa. Even if a vaccination is found to protect the healthy birds. American birds carry different bacteria and viruses than African birds and we could wipe out the entire African population. It is possible over ten to twenty years in completely isolated situations to crossbreed the African and American birds if they are all vaccinated but we are looking past our lifetimes. I think microchipping and building up our population here is the best we can do. Perhaps instead of selling these birds as pets we should raise the price and lease them out with the promise of another baby when they reach breeding age? It is only a thought. Anyone else?

- The adults started breeding after 2yrs when moved into indoor quarters. They laid one round that did not hatch (possibly because the nest was very dirty during incubation), have laid 3 clutches of 3 eggs since with 100% hatch (sorry but I have H/R all purely because I could not bear to lose them)my intentions are to let the parents rear in future as they seem to do a good job prior to me removing them. I now have 2 of the original youngsters (2yrs old) setup with unrelated partners and 2 from this year, hoping to do an exchange with a breeder from Belgium following a lot of interest at the Parrot Society Sale at Stafford on 13/10/02.Things are looking good for the future.

- Age When Brought Home: She's not home yet, as I still have to pay some more money on her, but I work with the birds at the petstore anyway, so I see her every day.
- Hand Fed: Yes
- Price: A helluva lot
Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: Very shy. She will step up for anyone, but only I can touch her on the head and pet her. She will, however, let anyone give her a head scratch through the bars when she is in her cage.
- Talking ability: Fair. She discovered the joys of whistling, so she's slower on the talking side. She can say "peekaboo", "Hi pretty girl", "uh-oh", "WHOA!!!!" and she laughs like she's never heard anything so funny in her life. She can whistle anything, though.
- Noise Level: VERY quiet. She's constantly singing and whistling, but she has a very quiet voice. My cockatiel can scream much louder than her.
- Activity Level: Very active. Constantly playing, eating, seperated by very short periods of nap and preening.
- Likes to bathe: Loves to dip in her water bowl, but she seems very indifferent to the spray bottle. She stands there like a statue when being misted.
- How cuddly or affectionate: Extremely cuddly with me. Constantly trying to make out with me when she's on my shoulder (her favourite place), and I have to remind her that we're in public. Loves to get her head scratched, but she is not very sure about lying on her back.
- Territorial: Not a drop.
Cage
- Size and type of cage: Very large and tall. Hagen "Beretta".
- Favorite toys and perches: Cotton perch. Anything wood to chomp on, and she likes to hang upside-down and attack her bell. Her very favourite toy is a junglegems acrylic toy which has keys and dice hanging from it. She wears this as a hat, pretending to be friends, and then when it least expects it, POW!! She is on it with a ferocity and relentlessness not for the faint of heart.
Diet
- Regular Diet: Hagen Tropican pellets, Large parrot gourmet and pastas, friuts, vegetables, cereal, legumes.
- Favorite Food: Fresh apple or dried orange.

- Shasta is my first parrot, although my experience working with parrots of all kinds is extensive. My ultimate goal in life would be to study and do conservation work with parrots in the wild. Particularily the Cape. I don't have my girl home yet which is disappointing as this is thanksgiving weekend for us Canadians, but I just couldn't wait to register her and share her information with everybody else who owns or is thinking to own a Cape. If you're thinking about it, do it!! They're amazing birds! I am pretty sure that Shasta was the other of Tommy Chang's babies who's pictures are on this website. Her brother is Xander, who lives in London. I didn't know this until i came to this website. Anyway, Thanx for reading this, i know I,m long winded.

- Chili is just awsome! He loves to cuddle and is so interested in everything I say. He just stands there watching with a thoughtful eye. As far as personality, he's got it and lots of it! Loves to be on his back and will even sit on his head in my hand, just hanging out with his feet in the air. He plays peek-a-boo where he gets zipped up in my sweatshirt. When I unzip it, I'll say something like "I found you". Then he makes a little uh-oh or some weird laugh then will tuck his head to hide again. A few times when he has gotten tired of playing he has crawled up to my shoulder and fallen asleep with just his beak poking out from under the shirt. Chili does get grumpy though. When he is just waking up or hasn't had play perch time yet, he will growl at you, until you make it clear that he does in fact need to step up. It took me a while to decide to bring him home, but now I wouldn't give it a second thought!

- Comments:
- Opie is Thor's brother and Kimba's clutchmate. We also have a Jardine parrot and first heard about Capes on our Jardine list.
When Scott Lewis wrote that he had this little boy, 1 year old, ready for a good home, we just could not
pass on the opportunity. Opie came to us very scared and is still getting adjusted.
He is very smart, strong-willed, and cuddly. He has already a quite extensive vocabulary and
talks in context. He occasionally bites, but always out of fear and because he still does not
realize the power of his beak, never by malice. Our experience with Opie, as with all the Cape parents we know, is
that Capes are a real treasure of the companion parrot world.

- Talking ability: Great. Darwin has several phrases that he will say. Hello, step up, good boy, whatcha doin', pretty bird, thank you, I love you, come here, and he calls to my two dogs by their names (Astro & Honnah)
- Noise Level: Moderate - Darwin can mimic a lot of other bird sounds and talks to other birds in the morning in our sun room. If he gets lonely he will get louder to be noticed.
- Activity Level: Just right. He plays well by himself and with his human friends. He is not demanding nor does he require your a whole lot of time.
- Likes to bathe: Loves to bathe at least once a week. If he doesn't get a good soaking he will try to play in his water dish.
- How cuddly or affectionate: I've found that there are certain times where he loves to cuddle and just loves to be scratched. But Darwin like most humans can have a spell where he doesn't want to be handled and will let you know by aggressive or quick actions.
- Territorial: Only on top of his playtop cage. Inside the cage or on one of his playstands he is not. I think this is because the playtop puts him higher than me (dominate).
Cage
- Size and type of cage: 32"Wx23"Dx29"H, California Cage - Amazon Playtop
- Favorite toys and perches: Perches: manzanita or concrete; Toys: anything he can chew or shred.
Diet
- Regular Diet: Harrison pellets, nuts, fruits, vegetables
- Favorite Food: Sweet potatoes, pork, chicken, kidney beans, baby food, corn bread
Vet Info
- Avian Vet or other Vet: Avian - Dr. Susan Leck
- Wings Clipped: Yes Both

- Comments:
- I have been blessed with a wonderful companion. The cape parrot is definitely the way to go when looking for a friend. Like all birds they can be messy but well worth the investment! I've found that Darwin learns sounds and words quicker from another bird than from me or a recording. Darwin has three brothers that live in the Atlanta area.

- I bought the pair almost three years ago and finaly got them to reproduce last year. Unfortunatly, the eggs hatch well but the parents don't feed the babies, we have to take care of them from day one. We lost last year's cluth but this year, we saved two out of three. The birds are kept as futur breeding stock but our hopes are not to great since it does'nt seem that there are breeders of Robustus robustus that I know of in Canada.

- Why you chose a Cape Parrot: Personality, not as loud as Amazons and not just a one person bird
Physical Characteristics
- Sex: Male
- Sub-species: Suahelicus
- Hatch Date: November 18, 1998
- Weight: don't know
- Coloring: some light salmon color in head feathers around face, but strong orange on wings and around feet- head and beak silver
- Length: don't know
Breeder
- Where Purchased: The Aviarium
- When Purchased: March 1999
- Age When Brought Home: 5 months
- Hand Fed: Yes
- Price: 1500.00
Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: shy, though can be aggressive with men- better with a harness on and better as long as continued to see people
- Talking ability: began talking after one year- phrases and words, better whistler, came up with his own phrases sometimes and very intelligent
- Noise Level: on a scale of 1-10, usually a 3-4, during practice hours could be an 8
- Activity Level: active
- Likes to bathe: yes- shower was his favorite, though water bottles he enjoyed too
- How cuddly or affectionate: very, especially at night
- Territorial: only if you reach inside cage
Cage
- Size and type of cage: King's cage, not sure size- maybe 2'X 3 1/2' and five feet hight including stand
- Favorite toys and perches: grew to like a happy hut after first year. Loved manzaneta perches, any wood toys or rope he could chew up or take apart, loved the small cage with toys in it.
Diet
- Regular Diet: Harrisons pellets, seed, and every night fruit (though he liked fruit very little), veggies, pasta and or beans. He ate anything healthy
- Favorite Food: sunflower seeds and pecans and pasta
Vet Info
- Avian Vet or other Vet: avian only
- Wings Clipped: Yes Both
- Health and Accidents: No health problems at all. Very clumsy when young and often fell straight down, injuring his chest. We decided to let his wings grow out and he was much better. The next cape have will be allowed for his wings to grow out until he has better balance and can glide. Sometimes if easily frightened with some unfamiliar object, he would flap his wings against teh ground and occassioanlly broke a blood feather, so you really ahve to be careful with the wing thing.Ziggy died in a freak accident at 2 1/2 years old losing his balance and falling on his back. We were devastated! We plan on buying another cape- they are the greatest!

- Comments:
- This baby was raised with EB's philosophy of co-parenting, and I understand that she was with her parents for about 8 weeks, only coming in a little bit every day during the last of that period. This is one self-possessed, happy, amazing little bird. She's calm, she has a poicephalus sense of humor with a happy outlook on life. She's curious, she's going to be best buddies with my Jardine's, and one of my best friends. I'll send pictures as soon as I can.

- Comments:
- Oldest chick, prob. male is still with parents at ll wks. Peeking out of box this week. Middle Lili fledging well now, baby ika was plucked a bit by parents as they never raised three before and she was over 7 days behind. still feathering out and just beginning to flap in basket and venture into light. Parent raised Ahina spent several nights in cabin with sisters after 8 week point when parents were already sleeping out of the box in the tree, so he is used to handfeeding and handling and human touch although being parent fed and taught throughout. Quite and education to pull chicks at two months! The move very quickly into the curiosity phase and accept human touch and adventures more like young adults than needy baby parrots.
Plumage on these three is exceptional. Glossy, lighter in green tones than last year's, not a stress mark on them. Note the spires on the tailfeathers of cape chicks. Am curious to know when they lose them.......

- I have bred African parrots for many years and Capes since 1992. It didn't take me long to proclaim these amazing birds as my favorite. Although my not so perfect health has kept me from adding more pairs of Capes to my breeding flock, I truly do enjoy and appreciate all of the fun these birds have brought into my life.

- Age When Brought Home: Approximately 1 1/2 - 2 years

Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: She has always been very shy. If movement is too fast/sudden around her she will make her sound that means, 'I'm scared' and run up my arm, and stick as much of herself under my hair as she can.
- Talking ability: Good. She says many of the words that my other companion birds do.
- Noise Level: Mostly low.
- Activity Level: She is always doing something, but is not as rambunctious as the boys are.
- Likes to bathe: Yes
- How cuddly or affectionate: Very affectionate and cuddly with me only.
- Territorial: No.
Cage
- Size and type of cage: Dome Top Freedom cage.... 20" d. 24" w. 39" h. actual usable space - outside feeders. Smaller than I normally recommend but we're home most of the time and they're out on play tables a good deal of the day.
- Favorite toys and perches: Swings.. with apple-wood perch or 'Sandy' perch. She likes swinging on a plastic chain toy.. yelling and flapping her wings as she does. Favorite hand toy is an old fashioned wooden clothespin to chew on.
Diet
- Regular Diet: Hagen Tropican, monkey chow, nutriberries, small amount of a good seed mix, nuts, fresh fruit and/or vegetables, sprouts, cooked sprouted mix with extra mixed veggies added.
- Favorite Food: Corn on the cob.

- Comments:
- Whisper was purchased as a possible future breeder, but is too shy to appreciate the company of birds. Although I certainly didn't need another pet, her obvious sense of insecurity made her mental stability seem so fragile and I didn't feel she could handle going to another home, so she is here to stay. She trusts me totally. She likes clinging to my shirt just under my chin while she has her turn helping me do some of my daily chores. I have to always be aware of what she is doing because she will suddenly let go of my shirt and roll down... into my hands! Thankfully, so far I have always managed to catch her.

- Sex: Male
- Sub-species: Fusicollis
- Hatch Date: Tonka: 09/02/93 Yoda:12/03/93
- Weight: Tonka: 329 grams Yoda: 322 grams
- Coloring: Average/normal fusicollis male coloring, with several different tones and shades of green ranging from vibrant med. grass green, (some very slightly tinged with blue), to deep olive, grey/silver, pink, orange and red.
- Length: They have decided that tape measures are not acceptable items and will give out many loud warning cries to alert every bird in the house, if one is seen.
Breeder
- Where Purchased: Self
- When Purchased: N/A
- Age When Brought Home: N/A
- Hand Fed: Yes
- Price: N/A
Personality
- Shy or aggressive around strangers: Depends on the situation and the stranger. They can be either, or just plain curious. From a distance they will sometimes ask, "Do you want to go get a nut?" or "Hey there! Do you want to see what I got?". But if a stranger gets too close to their space without Mama nearby, they may scream and run.
- Talking ability: Excellent. Here is a couple of stories about the boys that I love to tell. One morning I came running up the stairs in a panic that was caused by blood curdling screams coming suddenly from my pet birds' room. When I reached the top of the stairs, this is what I saw: Tonka was standing bolt-upright on a perch, looking downward. Yoda was on the same perch upside-down under Tonka, like a reflection. Tonka was demanding in a very gruff voice, "Give ME kiss!" Then Yoda would flap his wings wildly and scream bloody murder. When I saw what was happening, naturally, I went almost hysterical with laughter. Yoda rights himself on the perch, cocks an eye in my direction, and asks in his sweetest voice, "What's going on?" Tonka once told me in a very matter of fact way, "Mmmm - *smack*smack*smack*- Tonka's a good boy!" I said, "Tonka, you tickle me!" He responded by lifting his wings and saying ,"Gootchie, gootchie, gootchie." They are not only good talkers but also quite clever with copying some actions. One of the boys will approach the other, put his head down by the other boys' wing and moving his head up and down, say "Gootchie, gootchie." The boy being 'tickled' will raise his wing to accommodate his buddy, and will either repeat the words, or say "tickle, tickle". The newest thing for the boys to say is, in tandem, "Oh, you're just too silly you are!"
- Noise Level: They can spew it out at times, but this is not really considered the norm in most homes that have only one as a pet. My boys are competitive, and seem to love to echo each other. They are also most excellent as part of the 'Neighborhood Watch Crew'. They will sound loud warning cries if something they see out of the window isn't to their liking. All the other pets join in, and then it is enough of a ruckus to cause any neighbor within earshot to scan the area for anything that might be amiss!
- Activity Level: Usually very active and playful. Certain times of the year they are more active than usual.
- Likes to bathe: Definitely and often.
- How cuddly or affectionate: They both appreciate a good head scratching, a tickle or a kiss - no cuddling. They prefer that I take them to the patio door and talk to them about what's happening outside.
- Territorial: Usually.
Cage
- Size and type of cage: Dome top Freedom cage. Smaller than I normally recommend, (my floor space has been maxed out), but we're home most of the time and they're out on play tables a good deal of the day.
- Favorite toys and perches: A strong napkin or a paper towel to play tug-o-war with me, or just with each other. Also any hanging toy they can beat up while they're hanging from the cage top - especially ones that make a good racket.
Diet
- Regular Diet: Hagen Tropican, monkey chow, nutriberries, small amount of a good seed mix, nuts, fresh fruit and/or vegetables., sprouts, cooked sprouted mix with extra mixed veggies added.
- Favorite Food: Nuts - a toss up - Brazil & Almond. In the summer when our garden is mature, fresh corn on the cob is usually the top pick.
Vet Info
- Avian Vet or other Vet: Avian-knowledgeable vets.
- Wings Clipped: Yes Both
- Health and Accidents: HEALTH: When we moved into our former home, we did not have the water quality checked. The folks who owned it before had disconnected a flexible water line from the kitchen, (plugged it, rolled up the end, and laid it in the rafters of the basement), but did not disconnect it at the water source. Water that stood semi-stagnant bred both e.coli and pseudamonas. Some of the contaminated water would then be siphoned back into our main water system every time the water was turned on. All pets and breeders had to be treated with an antibiotic. Babies only receive distilled water so it did not affect them. ACCIDENT: Most breeders use to band all Poicephalus with closed aluminum bands. The Cape beak is powerful and many individuals use their bands as 'helpers' to break food on, and also just seem to like the snapping sound the beak can produce with them, and the metal soon wears thin. One morning I went in to feed the pets and Yoda had broken his band. With his beak he had then clamped it closed around itself, into an overlapping circle. His circulation was not impeded but we still made a 250 mile mad dash, to our vet to have bands removed from all pets, and microchips implanted. Capes babies should be banded with stainless steel, or they should be removed completely before they are a year old to be safe.
- Comments:
- The boys can be very strong-headed. For example, if Yoda wants a treat, he will fly down to the floor, so I must pick him up - which gives him the opportunity to latch onto my finger and demand, "Lets go get something verrry gooood!" He absolutely balks at getting onto his play area and will hold on like a cat being held over a tortoise, if I don't first placate his desires! He hangs on tight enough to make my finger turn a bit purple, and will bend backwards to avoid the dreaded 'down' perch.

- Comments:
- Oba is a darling little, relatively speaking, bird. He enjoys the company of humans and tolerates the other bird in my care. He grew up in the same home with six other parrots of differing species.
He can get obstinate when coming ouit of hiscage. I acknowledge the fact that he is like this because I had too many birds and I wasn't able to give him or the other birds the out time that he deserved and needed. That is why I have reduced the size of my folk from seven birds to only two birds.
Cape parrots,in my opinion, are wonderful birds to have as pets. I also recognize the fact that most parrot species in the world are threatenedwith extinction. That is why I got my Cape from a very reputable breeder in Wisconsin. If there is any way to extract my birds Sperm for breeding purposes, I will consider that as an option. I can't see letting go of the Lil' Fella otherwise.Oba is my joy, next to my partner,he is the focus of my life!

- Gus became somewhat phobic at about 1 year old. We went through counseling with Liz Wilson. It was really a fairly quick process and we are doing quite well. I love Gus dearly, he is very beautiful and quite a character, though a bit high strung. Whenever a bird flies off their perch, Gus can be counted on to call out "Help, Help!"! He's really funny. Mutters "hey, baby" at me when I walk by.
